Penguins Put Down the Panthers

by: The PensNation Staff

Penguins VS Bruins
4   3

The Panthers came to town last night looking to seek revenge from the loss to the Penguins last week. They hung tough for 65 minutes while Florida goalie Tomas Vokoun stood on his head to stop 47 of 50 shots the Penguins fired his way. Penguin center Evgeni Malkin opened the scoring up late in the first period when he backhanded in a pass from Sidney Crosby.

This looked like all the momentum the Penguins would need, but then came the second period and the wheels fell off, even though the Pens were continuing to dominate the the Panthers in the offensive zone, the Panthers were able to tie the game at 1 a piece early in the period and then go up by 2 goals later in the second period.

The Pens came out in the third period with what looked like a better sense of urgency, and they cashed in on their hard work in the previous 2 periods by tallying 2 goals in the first 6 minutes to knot things up at 3-3, which allowed Fleury to make up for the lack luster 2nd period and shut the door on the Panthers sending the game into overtime.

The overtime period was all Penguins, but they were unable to capitalize on any of the scoring chances that were presented their way due to the incredible effort out fourth by goaltender Tomas Vokoun. The Panthers drove the ice a few times but the Penguin defense pinched down and poked the puck away before they had any chance at a shot, sending the game into a shootout.

Right off the bat we find out the Penguins shooters will be Kris Letang, Sidney Crosby, and Evgeni Malkin. Letang shoots first and backhands one past Vokoun. Up first for the Panthers Richard Zednik heads towards the net shoots and a save by Fleury. Crosby was the third shooter he tries his best to get by Vokoun no dice. What ended up being the last Panther shooter Steve Weiss tried so hard that he shot the puck wide of the net. The nights final shooter one Evgeni Malkin took the puck down the middle, juked to the right Vokoun fell over trying to block the shot but Geno dangled the puck to the left and put it in to close the kitchen and seal up the victory for the Penguins.
